Prairie Ridge

The Village at Prairie Ridge

Within our community, you will have access to various businesses and amenities that cater to your needs. Our Welcome Center, administrative offices, nursing director, and activities department are all located here. Additionally, we have an indoor "park," a children's play area, sidewalk cafe, and treat shop that operates from 11:30 am-6 pm, available for residents, staff, and guests. Our community also offers a fireside area, hair salon, and a Community Center/Chapel that provides a relaxing environment for all.

Daily Life at Prairie Ridge

Most nursing homes in the United States only have planned activities five or six afternoons a week. However, at Prairie Ridge Care Center, residents can enjoy planned activities in the Cottage every morning, afternoon, and evening, 365 days a year, led by a host/hostess. Moreover, the activity staff ensures that residents can enjoy their time even on weekends when they are not going home.

Residents can go to the Village four times a week to participate in extensive group activities at the Community Center. The Community Center transforms into a chapel on Sunday afternoons, providing a more worshipful atmosphere.

Apart from planned activities, spontaneous activities also happen throughout the day and evening. A specially built trolley is available to provide transportation for concerts in the city park on Wednesday evenings during the summer, fishing trips, casual drives around town, and other special excursions. Occasionally, a sizeable wheelchair-accessible bus is rented for out-of-town trips, such as to see the Christmas lights nearby Maurice or to have a treat at the LeMars Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor.

Cottages & Resident Rooms

Each cottage is equipped with a secure patio area, which provides a fresh and comfortable environment for residents and visitors to relax, attend to their cottage vegetables or flowers, or be entertained by our egg-laying chickens, potbellied pigs, lop-eared rabbits, and pygmy goats. From 6:30 am until 10 pm, the cottage host or hostess engages residents in scheduled and spontaneous activities, serves meals and snacks, and acts as the “mom or dad” of the cottage, always available to lend a hand or an ear.

When leaving the Village, you can use either hallway until you reach a "porch," which signals that you are entering a residential area called a "cottage." Prairie Ridge has four resident cottages, namely Grandview, Pheasant Run, Countryside Cottages, and Sunrise Cottage. Grandview, Pheasant Run, and Countryside Cottages each accommodate 24 residents, while Sunrise Cottage is home to 11 memory care residents.

Each cottage is equipped with a spacious kitchen, dining and living area. The main kitchen provides meals to each cottage. Apart from the various menu offerings during meal times, residents can choose from the "always available" menu and have snacks from the fully-stocked cottage kitchen any time they wish. Alternatively, they can head to the Sidewalk Cafe for a burger or hot dog.

Each cottage has a family room that allows residents to entertain their visitors for meals, games, or socializing. Families can reserve these rooms for small gatherings and parties with their loved ones.

Prairie Ridge follows the practice of "consistent staffing," meaning the same nurses, CNAs, housekeepers, and hosts/hostesses work in a specific cottage rather than rotating across all of Prairie Ridge. This practice aims to enhance relationships with residents.

Prairie Ridge has a total of seventy-seven rooms, all of which are private. There are six larger rooms that can accommodate couples, but in the unfortunate event of one spouse passing away, the remaining resident will not be asked to move to a smaller room. Each room has low windows, a spacious closet, and a well-sized private bathroom with a roll-in shower. While each cottage has a spa with a whirlpool tub, we understand that more people prefer to take showers, so we have provided a shower in the privacy of each resident’s own bathroom. The rooms are spacious enough to allow residents to bring in multiple personal items in order to make their room feel more homely.
