Sleep Studies

Sleep Studies

At Orange City Area Health System, we are proud to offer a fully accredited sleep lab that is solely dedicated to helping patients improve their quality of life through better sleep. While most people know to seek medical assistance for pain and discomfort, sleep issues are frequently overlooked or disregarded. According to the National Sleep Foundation, approximately 50-70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders and problems, but unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness and education, over half of them remain undiagnosed or untreated.

Do you have the following signs, symptoms, and/or risk factors of an underlying sleep disorder:

  • Snoring
  • Waking gasping for air
  • Frequent urination at night
  • Morning headaches
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Insomnia
  • Lack of energy
  • Irritability
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease

Sleep Testing Accommodations

A formal sleep study is a non-invasive study conducted by one of our partnered sleep technicians from SomniTech. The study will look at multiple aspects of your sleep, such as brain waves, heart rhythm, respiration, eye movement, and leg movement. We know that sleeping away from home can be a challenge, that is why we have set up our sleep lab to convey the home environment as much as possible. Our sleep lab rooms are spacious with full size beds to help ensure comfort and privacy.

To find out more about obtaining a sleep study contact your provider or the Orange City Area Health System Respiratory Therapy department.

Introducing Inspire™ Sleep Apnea Therapy

Orange City Area Health System is proud to now offer Inspire™, a minimally invasive, implantable therapy designed to help people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who cannot tolerate traditional PAP (positive airway pressure) treatment.

What Is Inspire?

Inspire is an implantable device that monitors your breathing while you sleep. When it detects airway obstruction, it delivers gentle stimulation to the nerve that controls tongue and airway muscles, helping keep your airway open throughout the night. The system includes:

  • A small generator (implant)

  • A breathing sensor lead

  • A stimulation lead

  • A handheld remote control for the user to turn the device on/off or pause stimulation

The stimulation is typically imperceptible (or very mild) and the intensity can be adjusted by the provider and by you using the remote.

Why Consider Inspire?

Many people with moderate to severe sleep apnea struggle with PAP therapy intolerance (e.g. discomfort, claustrophobia, mask leaks, noise). Inspire offers an alternative by:

  • Acting inside your body rather than forcing air from outside

  • Being controllable — you can pause or adjust stimulation as needed

  • Allowing normal breathing and sleeping behaviors (you don’t need a mask or hose)

  • Demonstrated improvements in quality of life, daytime function, snoring, and OSA severity

In clinical studies over three years, about 78% of patients saw a reduction in OSA severity, and 80% reported soft or no snoring.

FAQs

Inspire is appropriate for individuals who:

  • Have been diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)

  • Are unable to tolerate or comply with PAP therapy

  • Meet certain anatomical and medical criteria (e.g. not severely overweight)

Your physician and a sleep specialist will evaluate your diagnostic sleep testing, anatomy, and overall health to see whether you qualify.

Implantation is done under general anesthesia during an outpatient procedure.

The device is placed via three small incisions (neck and chest).

Most patients recover within a couple of weeks and begin using the system soon after.

Follow-up appointments allow for fine-tuning of stimulation settings to optimize comfort and effectiveness.

Patients have reported:

  • Fewer nighttime breathing interruptions

  • Less daytime fatigue and sleepiness

  • Reduced snoring

  • Improved concentration, mood, and overall quality of life

In addition, Inspire helps avoid many of the challenges associated with PAP therapy — such as mask discomfort, skin irritation, noise, and portability issues.
