One in eight: Read Amber's story during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Amber is a radiologic technologist at Orange City Area Health System.

I remember riding in an elevator at work and seeing the poster that “1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime” – and considered that this would impact two of my coworkers based on that statistic. When I felt a lump one evening at the age of 39, I moved forward with diagnostic breast imaging. One week later I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and countless travel hours followed. Being back to work and knowing that I was the “1 in 8” has made me passionate about encouraging self-exams and regular screening mammograms!
