Botox for Migraines
At Orange City Area Health System, we now offer Botox® injections as an advanced treatment option for individuals with chronic migraines who have not found relief through traditional therapies such as medication, lifestyle changes, relaxation techniques, or nerve blocks.
If you are someone who...
Botox® is an injectable treatment made from a purified protein that helps relax muscles and prevent headaches. It works by temporarily blocking nerve signals to the muscles in the head and neck that are linked to migraine pain. While it doesn’t cure migraines, Botox can greatly reduce how often and how severe they are for many people. Originally known for its cosmetic uses, Botox is now widely used in medicine—including for migraines, urology, and other conditions—because of its ability to calm overactive muscles and nerve signals.
Botox® therapy may be an option for anyone who suffers from chronic or frequent migraine headaches—typically those occurring every other day or more. It’s best suited for individuals in generally good health without any muscle weakness or related disorders.
While there’s no cure for migraines, studies show that Botox® can help reduce how often, how long, and how severe migraine headaches are for many people. On average, patients receiving Botox report fewer headache days per month after a year of treatment compared with those who don’t. Some research also suggests that long-term use may lead to even greater improvements in preventing migraine episodes.
The Botox® procedure is quick and typically takes about 15 minutes in the clinic. A few small injections are placed in specific areas of the head and neck, based on where your migraines occur. The effects usually last up to three months, so regular follow-up appointments are important. Side effects are generally mild and may include temporary soreness, bruising, or headache at the injection sites.
