BLUNT TRUTH SYMPOSIUM ADDRESSES MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Dr. Christian Thurstone to present September 10 in Orange City

Marijuana legislation, modeled on the legislation passed in Colorado, has been proposed in the Iowa state legislature. The Blunt Truth Symposium, led by Dr. Christian Thurstone, will address what local communities can do to be proactive before this issue becomes a state problem for Iowa. The symposium — designed for professionals in healthcare, law enforcement, social work, mental health, and education, as well as the faith community and government officials — will be held Tuesday, September 10, from 8:30am to 2:00pm at the Prairie Winds Event Center in Orange City. Dr. Thurstone, medical director of the Substance Abuse Treatment, Education, and Prevention Program at Denver Health and Hospital Authority, was selected by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy as a national Advocate for Action. He will discuss new research on the negative health effects of regular marijuana use and its effect on the adolescent brain, the effects of medical and recreational marijuana on the community and the workplace, and similarities in the proposed Iowa bill and the Colorado law. In addition, Sioux County Deputy Caleb Haverdink will offer a local perspective. The cost for the symposium is $20 per person, which includes continental breakfast and lunch. Continuing education units are available for an additional $5. To register, contact Lisa Burg, Orange City Area Health System Public Relations and Education, at 712-737-5367, [email protected]; register online at ocHealthSystem.org/educational-programs; or click below. The Blunt Truth Symposium is sponsored by Orange City Area Health System, Sioux County Community Health Partners, and Compass Pointe Behavioral Health Services.
